The F-16V, or Viper, represents the next step in the evolution of the F-16. With new enhancements, including an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar , an upgraded mission computer and architecture, and improvements to the cockpit, integration of the Sniper Pod . The F-16V configuration is an innovative solution for older F-16 that is in need of the retrofit due to the new threats of 5th Generation fighters .
We are fortunate to be in Ft worth to catch the maiden flight of the F-16V. This example comes from Edwards AFB and belongs to the Republic of China Airforce ( Taiwan) of the F-16A Block 20 configuration. Under the contract awarded to Lockheed Martin in 2012, 145 of these F-16A will be upgraded with the Northrop Grumman‘s Scalable Agile Beam Radar (SABR). From reliable sources, these F-16V will be equipped with the new Sniper XR pod, new network link , AIM-9X and JHMCS helmet mounted sights. Hopefully with this project in place more of the Current USAF F-16C Blk 30s to 52s can also be upgraded with these features.
